What the app stores, and where
- Your logbook — trips, GPS tracks, boats, crew, photos, videos, plans, storage inventory, maintenance records, and settings are stored locally on your device.
- iCloud sync — if your device is signed into iCloud, this data syncs through your private iCloud database, managed by Apple and protected by your Apple ID. The developer has no access to it. Video files stay on the device that recorded them.
Location
Location is used for exactly two features: recording your track while you sail, and watching your position while the anchor alarm is armed. Background access keeps these working with the phone locked. Your location is processed on the device and is never sent to the developer. You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings.
Photos and videos
Photos and videos you attach to trips are copied into the app's local storage on your device. Share cards you create are saved or shared only where you send them.
Network requests the app makes
The app contacts third-party services only to draw maps and name places:
- Apple Maps — base maps and geocoding (subject to Apple's privacy policy).
- OpenSeaMap / EMODnet — nautical chart tiles.
- OpenStreetMap (Overpass API) — marina and water-body names near your start and end points.
Like any web request, these services see your IP address and the map area requested. No identity, no account, and no logbook content is included. Chart tiles are cached on-device so repeat viewing works offline.
What we collect about you
Nothing. There is no telemetry, no crash-reporting SDK, no fingerprinting, and no third-party analytics in the app. We never receive your name, email, location, or usage data.
Data retention and deletion
Because everything is yours and local, deletion is simple: deleting the app deletes its data from the device. To remove synced data from iCloud as well, delete the app's data under iOS Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage. We hold nothing, so there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
Your rights (GDPR & similar laws)
Sailing Log processes no personal data on the developer's behalf, so there is no data controller processing to object to, access, or port. Your data is exclusively in your possession (and your iCloud account, under Apple's terms). If you believe any of this is inaccurate, contact us and we will investigate.
Children
Sailing Log is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
